The ‘Resident Evil’ movies could probably go on forever. There’s seemingly no serious narrative goal, and each installment is little more than a guilty pleasure for its fans. While the latest sequel, ‘Resident Evil: Retribution,’ debuted to the lowest numbers since the first film, its opening weekend box office take is still not much lower than the series best. They’re not huge money makers, but they are pretty consistent, and it shouldn’t be overlooked that they also earn about 70% of their total gross overseas.
So, as the final cliff-hanging moment of ‘Retribution’ promises, yes, there will be a part six.

How do you define a hit? What's more important: total gross or actual audience enthusiasm? The answer to this question will help us decide who actually won the weekend. Call it the "Battle of the Paul Andersons": Paul WS Anderson's 'Resident Evil: Retribution' and Paul Thomas Anderson's 'The Master' both opened this week and both had completely different results, but they beg to be compared to each other.

'Resident Evil: Retribution' Review

Here's the problem with the 'Resident Evil' movies: they feel more like video games than the video games they're based on. Capcom's 'Resident Evil' is dark, sinister, disturbing, and cinematic. Paul W.S. Anderson's 'Resident Evil: Retribution' is loud, violent, hectic, and dumb. It's like taking the world's greatest wagyu beef steak and grinding it to make a greasy hamburger.

We got more than a good look at Director Paul W.S. Anderson's latest, 'Resident Evil: Retribution,' back at the San Diego Comic-Con panel, but apparently, there was even more to be had as the film had to be cut down for today's theatrical premiere, leaving many scenes to be left unwatched by the public... at least for now.

by Jacob Hall September 1, 2012 @ 4:51 PM
Although we're currently in the movie doldrums, there are two big action movies looking to make a splash this September. On one hand, you've got 'Dredd,' a reboot of a comic book franchise that was dead on arrival in its original 1995 incarnation, and you've got 'Resident Evil: Retribution,' the fifth entry in a series that, like its zombie villains, refuses to die. Now, the former has a new featurette and the latter has a handful of new TV spots.

For a series that places little emphasis on plot, the 'Resident Evil' movies sure have a lot of it. With 'Resident Evil: Retribution' (the fifth film in this never-ending franchise) hitting theaters next month, someone at the marketing department decided that a handy dandy recap of the entire series to date was in order. And they were right. This series has been nothing but a series of left turns into Crazytown and the clip below showcases elegantly how the (comparatively) small first film evolved into something as big and bizarre as the later entries.

by Jacob Hall July 14, 2012 @ 12:35 PM
Although it's become something of a modern B-movie institution by this point, the 'Resident Evil' film series has never sat particularly well with many fans of the original video games. However, fans have taken solace with Capcom's animated adaptations of the game series, which stick a bit closer to the tone of the source material. The first trailer for 'Resident Evil: Damnation,' the follow-up to 2008's 'Resident Evil: Regeneration,' premiered at Comic Con and is now online for your viewing pleasure.
