For those of us who follow the box office, this weekend was a case of deja vu. Once again, 'Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted' headlined the top ten and once again, 'Prometheus' snatched the number two spot. Both films managed to keep their momentum despite the opening of two new releases starring two of the biggest movie stars in the world. That's good news if you're 'Madagascar 3' or 'Prometheus,' but pretty bad news if you're Tom Cruise or Adam Sandler.

The phrase "80's rock" calls certain things to mind: big voices playing big arenas singing big power ballads to big crowds with big hair. Bigness in all its forms, in other words, was the key to the era. And it's this part of the 80s rock scene that the new musical 'Rock of Ages' gets right -- maybe a little too right.

This film is one towering tribute to excess. Clocking in at over two hours and featuring 900 songs (approximate), it feels like an entire decade of music crammed into one supremely excessive movie. They didn't pour some sugar on this thing; they poured the whole friggin' box. And then they lit the box on fire and threw up some mock-sinister devil horns.

'Rock of Ages' is unlike most movie musicals you'll see because with this film, you have most of the songs on your iPod already. You grew up listening to Whitesnake, Guns N Roses, Def Leppard and Poison and the only difference now is that Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Russell Brand and more are singing the lyrics.

It's interesting to hear what the actors we love like – Paul Giamatti, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Mary J. Blige who are also apart of this phenomenal cast - sound like when they sing some of our favorite songs from the 80’s like - 'Don’t Stop Believin' and 'I Wanna Rock'.
