Although he's been busy putting the finishing touches on 'The Wolf of Wall Street' for its upcoming Christmas release, Martin Scorsese still managed to find time to throw together this charming short film for fashion house Dolce and Gabbana. The black and white short, which stars Matthew McConaughey and Scarlett Johansson, promotes the brand's The One fragrance line, but if anything, it just makes us want to see Scarlett Johansson in a Scorsese film.
Before I write anything else about 'Don Jon': yes, there are some guys in Northern New Jersey who really do act this way. Some of the particulars are exaggerated, but not really. Whether the interior life of Joseph Gordon-Levitt's protagonist gym rat, club denizen, muscle car driver is accurate is something I'll never know, and considering the emotional dysfunction on display, I think I'm okay with it.
Scarlett Johansson's performance in 'Under the Skin' is perhaps best known for one where she is naked frequently. And, while that might be all you really need to know about 'Under the Skin,' there is also this interesting tidbit. For the film, where Scarlett plays a beautiful-but-evil man-killer, the actress secretly went out, seduced regular guys walking down the street and lured them into a van.
From the center of a black screen a white dot forms into a sphere. Then, blue discs and then, finally, what looks like tar draining away from pure white. Mixed in with eerie music and some incoherent babble from a female voice. Even though I've seen all of 'Under the Skin' I still only have a vague, gut reaction idea of what these opening moments are meant to represent. And...I think that's exactly the idea?
'Under the Skin' premiered at the Telluride film festival this week in Colorado, and while it's garnered some divisive reviews, we've got our first look at this sexy and very creepy new sci-fi thriller from Jonathan Glazer, director of 'Sexy Beast' and 'Birth.' Starring Scarlett Johansson, the film promises to deliver some very strange and seductive visuals -- if this first teaser is any indication.
Released in 2001 and based on the cult comic book of the same name by Daniel Clowes, 'Ghost World' follows best friends Enid and Rebecca (Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson) as they graduate high school and attempt to navigate adult life. Though the film wasn't a box office hit, 'Ghost World' has gained an immense cult following in the years since its release. 12 years later, we take a look back at the cast of the film and see what they're up to now.
'Don Jon' - Joseph Gordon-Levitt's directorial debut - has been surprising audiences all year at film festivals. We caught it at the SXSW earlier this year and, like the entire crowd, fell in love with it. 'Don Jon' is a smart, funny, charming and self-assured movie. This isn't just an actor writing and directing a movie because he's bored - this is the start of a whole new career for Gordon-Levitt, and one we couldn't look forward to more.
And, now is your chance. 'Don Jon' is opening in theaters this September, but why wait until then? We're holding an exclusive screening in New York City just for ScreenCrush.com readers and we've got your free tickets.
The first official trailer for Spike Jonze's latest film, 'Her,' looks (dare we editorialize?) fantastic. In the film, Joaquin Phoenix plays a lonely, divorced guy who falls in love with the voice of a computer -- and who wouldn't fall in love with that voice when it belong to Scarlett Johansson?!
