The Secret to ‘Logan’s Success? Bringing Old Superhero Movies Into the Future

by Matt Singer March 6, 2017 @ 12:36 PM
My recent list of the most dated parts of the original X-Men movie included things like Hugh Jackman’s comparatively non-huge, non-jacked-man physique, Wolverine’s non-stop smoking, and the heroes’ black leather costumes. The list also included the relative lack of Easter eggs; even with about ten major roles in the film, the first X-Men movie is, at least by contemporary standards, a small movie. There’s no sense of a wider Marvel Universe beyond the edges of the frame, there’re few appearances by (or references to) other mutants, and there’s no post-credits scene to tease future films. It is a movie unto itself.

‘The Invitation’ Director Karyn Kusama to Helm Horror Flick ‘Breed’

Karyn Kusama handily delivered one of this year’s best thrillers with The Invitation, an incredibly unnerving and masterful “horror film for grown-ups” that proves you don’t need gimmicky jump scares and supernatural creatures to create chilling atmosphere and spooky vibes. Although her most recent effort wasn’t overt horror, it looks like Kusama’s next project definitely is, as she’s attached herself to helm Breed for executive producer Scott Frank.

A few weeks back, we learned that Scott Frank and Steven Soderbergh’s new Western miniseries Godless has begun initial casting with none other than Newsroom alum Jeff Daniels, and the official report brings yet more good news. Not only is Daniels confirmed, but so too is Walking Dead alum Merritt Wever, a Game of Thrones member and more.

Steven Soderbergh Reunites With ‘Out of Sight’ Scribe for ‘Godless’ Netflix Series

by Britt Hayes March 1, 2016 @ 8:01 PM
According to Steven Soderbergh, it may be a couple of years before we return to The Knick (or something like it), but in the meantime the semi-retired filmmaker is working on an ambitious HBO film with Sharon Stone, a potential return to the big screen, and producing three television series. We can add another project to his growing pile of work, as Soderbergh is set to reunite with Oscar-nominated Out of Sight scribe Scott Frank for a new Netflix series.

Director Scott Frank Wants You to Know 'Walk Among the Tombstones' is Not 'Taken 4'

by Mike Ryan September 15, 2014 @ 11:50 AM
Scott Frank, the director of ‘A Walk Among the Tombstones,’ wants you to know that, even though his movie stars Liam Neeson, this is not, as he puts it, ‘Taken 4.’ (Technically, ‘Taken 3’ hasn’t been released yet, but it’s probably safe if we skip ahead. The point is still taken.) And he’s right – a mystery set in 1999 against the backdrop of Y2K (of all things), ‘A Walk Among the Tombstones’ has a slower, brooding, almost noir feel to it that is not at all anything like, say, ‘Non-Stop.’ Yes, I can see why Frank wants to get the word out.

'A Walk Among the Tombstones' Trailer: Liam Neeson is an Unorthodox Private Detective

by Damon Houx May 29, 2014 @ 5:01 PM
Liam Neeson stars in 'A Walk Among the Tombstones,' which is finally coming to the big screen and now there's a trailer to prove it. After a decade in development (at one point Harrison Ford and Joe Carnahan were attached), screenwriter/director Scott Frank is bringing the Lawrence Block novel to the big screen, and fortunately he has the perfect star for the material.
