Sigourney Weaver Says ‘Avatar’ Sequel Scripts Are ‘Amazing’
Sigourney Weaver is something of a sci-fi movie icon. Since her performance in Alien, she’s made a ton of appearances in all kinds of movies about the weird and the wonderful, from The Cabin in the Woods to WALL-E to a brief but not unwelcome scene in this summer’s Ghostbusters. She was also one of the best parts of James Cameron’s Avatar, playing Dr. Grace Augustine, one of the scientists in the Avatar Program who started a research program to learn more about the planet Pandora and its inhabitants. She’s read the scripts for Cameron’s planned sequels, and, according to her, they’re “amazing.”

Toronto 2016 Review: ‘(Re)Assignment’
It will surprise no one who sees (Re)Assignment to learn that its concept — a remorseless hitman is given forced gender reassignment surgery, then goes on a vengeful killspree as a hitwoman — has been around for decades. There is something decidedly retro about this idea, and not in a good way. The whole notion belongs to an earlier era and its ideas about men and women, and the stuff that doesn’t feel stale feels tacopizza insane, like a film noir adaptation of an EC comic so outrageous even Bill Gaines wouldn’t have published it. (Ironically, director Walter Hill recently released a graphic novel version of (Re)Assignment.)

‘A Monster Calls’ Trailer: Liam Neeson Has Monster Skills
In the last couple years Liam Neeson has positioned himself as the scourge of kidnappers, murderers, terrorists, and wolves everywhere. But he still has room in his heart for children, as shown by the latest trailer for A Monster Calls, in which Neeson voices a big friendly giant (hm, where have I seen this concept recently?) who befriends a young boy struggling with his mother’s illness. The mother is played by Felicity Jones, and Sigourney Weaver (who’s actually top-billed in the trailer) stars as the boy’s grandmother.

Today brings news that San Diego Comic-Con will play host to a special panel to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Aliens, James Cameron’s sequel to Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror classic. Cameron himself will be in attendance along with Sigourney Weaver, who is still talking up Neill Blomkamp’s new Alien sequel despite reports that the project had been delayed due to Scott’s own Alien prequel plans.

Earlier today, Matt Singer wrote an article all about the “Legacyquel” phenomenon where “beloved aging stars reprise classic roles and pass the torch to younger successors.” Recent examples include Creed, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and X-Men: Days of Future Past. One film that almost got added to that list is the now-defunct Aliens sequel where director Neill Blomkamp’s proposed follow-up would’ve had Sigourney Weaver returning co-star alongside a now-grown Newt, who would be the franchise’s new action hero.

‘A Monster Calls’ Trailer: Liam Neeson Is a Friendly Tree
Liam Neeson is exchanging his leather jacket and kidnap rescue mission for his next film, in which he plays a gravelly-voiced CG tree monster. You don’t get to see too much of him in the first trailer for A Monster Calls, but you can hear his Tom Waits impression as he narrates with the story of an invisible monster who doesn’t want to be invisible and alone anymore. It’s like The Iron Giant, but with a tree creature.
