Having won an audience prize at the Toronto International Film Festival, David O. Russell's 'Silver Linings Playbook' is now a big dog in this year's Oscar race. Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence star in this film about messed up people trying to reconnect with the world, and now there's a mushier second trailer.
Of every film festival award, few seem to matter as much as the People's Choice Award (i.e., audience award) at the Toronto International Film Festival. Sure, the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival has an air of prestige that Toronto can never achieve (not quite French enough), but the big winners in Toronto tend to make a big splash when they hit theaters. Or, in the case of 'Slumdog Millionaire' and 'The King's Speech,' they take home a Best Picture Oscar. This spells good things for 'Silver Linings Playbook,' which won the the People's Choice today.
'Silver Linings Playbook' asks an important question: are audiences interested in watching Katniss Everdeen and that guy from 'The Hangover' try to overcome crippling sadness for two hours? The success of the film depends on the answer to that question being a "yes." The new poster for the film does its best to convince you of that "yes," mainly by reminding you of how gorgeous its lead actors are.
Though we're in the think of the summer blockbuster movie season, it's never too early to start looking ahead to Oscar season. Case in point: the new Bradley Cooper / Jennifer Lawrence trailer for 'Silver Linings Playbook' which looks like it could be a candidate for more than a few awards.
