Star of The Leftovers, the third season of Fargo, and currently filming a Spielberg movie, Coon is on the rise. And what better way to round out a great year than by adding a Steve McQueen movie to your slate?

It seems like everyone’s clamoring for a Tupac movie these days (there’s one coming out in June), and if you’re into movies following famous hip hop artists’ crazy life stories, today brings some pretty big news: a feature-length Tupac documentary is coming from none other than 12 Years a Slave director Steve McQueen.

To say that Steve McQueen’s heist thriller Widows should be on your radar would be an understatement. The film, adapted from a BBC miniseries of the same name, already boasts an incredibly talented cast list — and has just added veteran actor and Oscar winner Robert Duvall.

It’s been over three years since Steve McQueen released his last film, 12 Years a Slave, but the director of the Oscar-winning drama has a couple of projects on the horizon — including Widows, an upcoming heist thriller based on a screenplay by McQueen and acclaimed Gone Girl author and screenwriter Gillian Flynn. Viola Davis signed on to star in the film last fall, and today brings word that another awards season favorite has joined her in McQueen’s highly-anticipated new project.

Steve McQueen won an Oscar for 12 Years a Slave, 2013’s Best Picture, and then he pretty much vanished. He’s done a couple little things here and there, but no significant follow-up. That project finally seems to be materializing, as Variety reports that McQueen is working on a film called Widows and he’s lined up an Oscar nominee as one of his big stars: Viola Davis, she of Suicide Squad and How to Get Away With Murder and the upcoming Fences, which looks like it could be an Academy Award contender as well.

Now here’s some absolutely heavenly news: we heard a while back that one of Steve McQueen’s upcoming projects is a big screen remake of the BBC miniseries Widows, about a group of women performing a major heist. While that project already sounds great on its own, it just got a little more exciting with the addition of Gone Girl author/screenwiter Gillian Flynn, who knows a thing or two about edgy, female-driven stories.

After winning the Academy Award for Best Picture for his incredible drama ‘12 Years a Slave,’ we’ve been wondering what director Steve McQueen’s next film project might be. With a Best Picture Oscar in tow, the guy could do just about anything he wants, but it seems like he’s been (wisely) taking his time. And it’s kind of a relief to know that he’s in no rush. But now McQueen has announced his next project: a film about the life of activist, actor, singer, and man of many talents Paul Robeson.
