‘Creed’ Review: An Old Franchise Flies High Again
“The way I imagine it, after the fight, he’s riding home in a cab, with the roar of the people chanting ‘Rocky!’ still in his ears. And he just drops over dead. In other words, he has achieved everything possible and he dies when he’s on top. I don’t think people want to see Rocky when he’s 80.”

Creed is not your father’s Rocky movie. The Michael B. Jordan-led boxing picture, set for a November 25 release, hails from the meanest streets of Philadelphia. Sly Stallone had to contend with his own self-doubt and his love for Adrian, but as the son of legendary boxer and Rocky Balboa’s frequent sparring partner Apollo Creed, Jordan has more street-wise concerns. This is a new Rocky, an urban Rocky, a defiantly and proudly black Rocky. The trailer played up the racially-transposed angle of the film, including shots of gang members leering at Jordan’s character as he jogs down the street in training. And of course, a fresh Rocky demands a fresh theme song.

In a few weeks the Rocky franchise will return with a bit of a new direction, centering on Adonis Johnson, the son of Rocky Balboa’s former friend and legendary boxing opponent Apollo Creed. Warner Bros. has released several new clips (compiled above) from Creed, showing off some dramatic and intimate character work, and obviously saving the best stuff (the boxing) for the theatrical release.

The Expendables 3 was not a big hit. Despite packing in even more all-star action heroes, the film topped out at just $35 million (down from over $100 million for the original). But, the Expendables franchise is still popular overseas and, as we’ve seen recently with Pacific Rim and Terminator Genisys, sometimes that’s enough to keep sequel hopes alive. To keep The Expendables going, Lionsgate has pacted with SSXH Beijing for investment in The Expendables 4, which is now planned to go into production in 2016 for a release some time in 2017.

It’s especially not surprising that that the film has cast the likes of Sylvester Stallone, John Goodman, Paul Giamatti, and Rosario Dawson – every animated movie is chock-full of big names these days. The real surprise to come out of this news is just how much the upcoming film crosses over with the video game talent.

Hey yo, Internet, check this out, y’know? It’s like the first picture from the set of Creed, the new Rocky spinoff about the son of Rocky’s greatest rival and best friend, Apollo Creed, who decides to follow in his father’s footsteps and enter the fight game. Eventually he comes to Rocky and asks him to become his trainer; the way Mickey was a mentor and teacher to Rocky. Thus the circle is complete; the student becomes the teacher, the son becomes the father. This is some profound stuff, dudes.
