Given the record-breaking success of 'Ted' this past weekend, the execs at Universal are most certainly talking today about plans for 'Ted 2.' Hollywood ought to now have greater trust in original ideas. Or, if not that, at least they should allow Seth MacFarlane to develop any other original project of his own devise. After all, much of the appeal of the comedy is that it's by the creator of 'Family Guy' and other hit television series. And his trademark pop culture-possessed sense of humor draws audiences more than does this film's specific story of arrested development.

But knowing Hollywood, we can guarantee that its first response this morning is to focus not on the “fluke” $54 million gross of a fresh property but on how to turn that newly minted name brand into an ongoing franchise. So what will Seth MacFarlane cook up for 'Ted 2?'

Dear Hollywood, What the hell, man?

I know that at the end of the day all you care about is the bottom line, but, as individuals, you are liberals. That's just the way it is. But I guess the special red telephones got disconnected because things got out of hand this weekend. There are not one, not two, but three otherwise normal, liberal Hollywood movies from big studios that think nothing of a little homophobic humor. Consider that the release date comes not even a full week after Gay Pride, and I think we can call this a major disconnect.

When I was a little kid I prayed to any deity that would listen to grant my dog the power of speech. I was pretty sure my dog would be chock full of witticisms and would be a nice additional voice in family affairs.

The dream never came true, but the character of Brian on all 652 seasons of 'Family Guy' have made for a nice substitute. And I'm fairly certain that some dorm room kids crunked on the chronic (or whatever the younger generation calls it these days) have sat glassy-eyed in front of their TVs, watched Brian the dog and wondered what it would be like to actually see an anthropomorphized character like, you know, for real man.

Seth MacFarlane's very entertaining 'Ted' is the closest we'll get to that in a long time.
