Terminator Genisys

'Terminator Genisys' is actually a reboot of the entire 'Terminator' franchise and the start of a new trilogy. The film will return Arnold Schwarzenegger to star as the classic T-800, but in a completely different timeline. 'Game of Thrones' star Emilia Clarke will play the new Sarah Connor who has been raised by a version of the T-800 since she was a teen. Jason Clarke plays John Connor, who sends Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back to save his mother.

Of the four Terminator films previously released, Arnold Schwarzenegger technically only appeared in three. The iconic actor was too busy, you know, being the Governor of California to make an appearance in McG’s Terminator: Salvation, so his face was digitally placed over a Schwarzenegger-esque body instead. With Terminator Genisys hitting theaters soon, Schwarzenegger has been talking about the franchise a lot, and he has some choice words for Salvation.

Throughout the marketing for Terminator Genisys, we haven’t really seen much (if at all) of J.K. Simmons, who appears to play a detective who helps Emilia Clarke’s Sarah Connor in the upcoming prequel-sequel-alternate timeline-something-or-other. That changes now with a new TV spot in which the recent Oscar-winner features prominently, also offering up some new footage from the film.

It’s a poster! It’s a YouTube teaser! Actually, it’s a “living one-sheet” for the upcoming Terminator Genisys, featuring Mr. T-800 himself, Arnold Schwarzengger with his skin peeling off to reveal his metal endoskeleton. I like this sort of thing! Partly because it involves Arnold Schwarzenegger, and there’s not too many way you can go wrong there, but mostly because it’s different than your typical barrage of posters and one-sheets, along with micro-trailers and whatnot.

Of all of the big sequels opening this summer, Terminator: Genisys is easily the strangest of the bunch. Simultaneously a sequel and a reboot, the film follows the template of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek, using time travel to overwrite everything we know about this series so the characters can play in a wild new sandbox. Although we still don’t know the exact shape of that sandbox, a new batch of images from the film give us a look at the players in it, including Arnold Schwarzenegger’s aged Terminator, Emilia Clarke’s Sarah Connor and J.K. Simmons’ Detective O’Brien.

Terminator Genisys doesn’t hit theaters for a few more months, but we’ve already got release dates for two sequels, which seems absurd, since it’s uncertain how the first film will perform—we don’t know if it will be massively successful (or even good) enough to warrant two more films. But Arnold Schwarzenegger says he’s coming back for the Terminator Genisys sequels, whether you like (or want) it or not.

One of our biggest issues with the first ‘Terminator Genisys’ trailer was that it was a little confusing. Not just the time travel, but the whole premise of the movie; is this a remake or a reboot or a sequel or some combination of all the above? This new ‘Terminator’ Super Bowl trailer doesn't attempt to address all those concerns in its allotted 30 seconds (probably because that would be impossible), but instead focuses on the action, which is something we can get behind.

‘Terminator 2’, James Cameron’s sequel to his cult hit from 1984, had a budget of $94 million. That may not sound like much these days when Michael Bay movies routinely cost over $200 million, but in 1991, when ‘Terminator 2’ first opened in theaters, it was the most expensive movie ever made (this was even more impressive considering that the original ‘Terminator’ cost only $6 million to make). A good chunk of that money went to star Arnold Schwarzenegger who was paid a then-record $15 million, plus they bought him a private jet! Want to know more? After watching the first trailer for ‘Terminator Genisys,’ and after downing some Aspirin to deal with the headache of trying to sort out that wacky timeline, you may have wondered about the level of detail that went into recreating the past settings and costumes from the ‘80s. They probably just did some CG magic or cheated the best they could to replicate key moments and details. According to the film’s costume designer, that’s not the case. In fact, she was so insistent on replicating the original costumes that she had Nike drop what they were doing just to make her a pair of shoes for Kyle Reese.

Trying to Make Sense of the 'Terminator Genisys' Trailer
If you're anything like us here at ScreenCrush HQ, you were left a little confused (among other things) by the 'Terminator Genisys' trailer. Specifically, how it fit into 'Terminator' and 'T2' and their existing timelines (we're assuming that 'Rise of the Machines' and 'Terminator: Salvation' have been completely written off). Is this a reboot? A sidequel? A bootquel? Because it started to break out brains a little bit, Managing Editor Matt Singer and I say down to try and parse the plot of this film (with the help of some GIFs and screencaps) to see if we could get to the bottom of things.
