When the Avengers reassemble for their big sequel this weekend, they do it to stop Ultron, an eight-foot-tall robot who wants to destroy the world. He’s the accidental creation of Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, who are trying to create an artificial intelligence capable of protecting the planet from threats too big for even the Avengers to handle. Their experiment is a horrific success; Ultron becomes self-aware, gives himself a body made out of spare Iron Man parts, and begins plotting the Earth’s destruction. “You want to protect the world, but you don't want it to change,” he tells the Avengers. “There’s only one path to peace. Your extinction ... when the dust settles, the only thing living in the world will be me!”

The superheroes at the center of Avengers: Age of Ultron resonate so strongly with so many people because they’re so deeply entrenched in popular culture. Captain America, Iron Man and the Hulk were around for years before Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo were even born. These aren’t just characters – they’re icons. And while serious comic book nerds know how much Earth’s mightiest heroes have changed with the times, taking a look back at what the likes of Black Widow and Hawkeye and the Vision used to look like is both entertaining and (dare we say it?) educational.

Joss Whedon Says Marvel Studios Was Pissed When ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Was Announced

One of the main reasons so many people have taken to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the interconnectedness of it all. At the same time, the attention to continuity and building a new superhero canon has wreaked no small amount of havoc on the creative end, where producers and writers and directors have all butted heads in various ways. The latest bit of weirdness comes via the increasingly honest Joss Whedon, who hasn’t been shy about his friction with Marvel Studios while he’s been promoting Avengers: Age of Ultron. According to Whedon, Marvel Studios wasn't very happy with the decision to make a TV show starring a character (Agent Coulson) they had just killed off in the movies.

EDIT

At some point, we’re not sure when, Sesame Street stopped being a low-key educational children’s program and started being an educational children’s program that finds time to create internet-friendly parodies of whatever pop culture event is huge in a given week. So yeah, of course the show has made an Avengers-themed sketch and of course it’s called The Aveggies: Age of Bon Bon and of course it recasts Cookie Monster as the Hulk.

Just in time for the arrival of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel is teaming up with adidas for a line of new, superhero-inspired sneakers. Most prominently, the collaboration has yielded a pair of Quicksilver kicks to celebrate the introduction of the new character, although the color of Quicksilver’s sneakers makes them look like they might belong to Bruce Banner.
