‘Avengers 2’ Shot Footage For a Captain Marvel Cameo

For a long time, it was rumored that Captain Marvel would make an appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron. And then those rumors dried up, replaced by official word that Carol Danvers would not be making her big screen debut in the film. Now, we have confirmation that those early rumors were on point at the very least. Captain Marvel was this close to showing up in the Avengers sequel, so much so that special effects footage was shot for her appearance.

Joss Whedon has not been shy about why he’s done directing massive Marvel movies after Avengers: Age of Ultron. He’s tired. So tired, in fact, that he wasn’t able to properly engage in a Marvel Cinematic Universe tradition with his second outing and cram the frame with tiny easter eggs that only fans will notice and appreciate.

Ever since the Hulk stole the show back in 2012’s The Avengers, fans have been clamoring for a solo adventure for Mark Ruffalo and his big, green alter-ego. And yet, we’ve heard nothing and aside from a tiny cameo in Iron Man 3, Bruce Banner has sat out Marvel’s Phase 2. However, Ruffalo himself has spoken out about the matter and it sounds like Earth’s mightiest green rage monster is being constrained by the most powerful force in the universe: rights issues.

Avengers: Age of Ultron has already begun screening for critics and it has been receiving very positive responses, which is definitely not doing anything to deter our personal hype from reaching unfair and dangerous levels. Thankfully, Marvel has thrown the rest of us a bone with this new clip from the film, which features enough of that typical Joss Whedon wit and enough big action to satiate us for, oh, another day or so.

If The Avengers feel like one big, slightly dysfunctional family, it's because they are. And that applies to off-screen as well as on. The Planet Hulk movie rumors have been swirling around the internet for years, but they have been dismissed swiftly by everyone from Avengers director Joss Whedon, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn and Marvel president Kevin Feige. It seemed that the rumors would stay as rumors and that a Planet Hulk movie would never happen. But now, just as Avengers 2 is set to hit theaters, star Mark Ruffalo has provided some fuel to the fire that it just may happen one day in some way, shape or form.

Since the very first Avengers 2 trailer, one of the scenes we were most looking forward to was the Hulk vs. Hulkbuster battle. If you just can’t wait until May 1, last night during the MTV Movie Awards, Marvel premiered an extended clip showing you more of the epic brawl between the two Avengers powerhouses.

Marvel held a huge press conference in support of Avengers: Age of Ultron, but that wasn’t the only topic on the agenda — Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige debuted a new Ant-Man trailer, which will arrive online tomorrow (don’t worry), and Feige spoke a bit about how their tiny superhero fits into the larger MCU.

We’re just weeks away from the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron, which means Marvel is really ramping up their promotion for the upcoming super-sequel. In addition to new featurettes, TV spots, and the debut of Vision’s very own character poster (finally), the studio continues to release images from Joss Whedon’s epic new film. Today’s batch includes a couple of set photos along with new looks at super-siblings Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.
