We were so impressed with the visuals coming from films like Ang Lee's 'Life of Pi,' Joss Whedon's 'The Avengers' (which was nominated for an Oscar, if you haven't heard) and The Wachowski's 'Cloud Atlas.' Even films we thought were horrible, like 'Snow White and the Huntsman,' painting imaginative portraits. So we had to see what film our readers thought provided the biggest payoff in terms of visual effects, and, in fact, Peter Jackson's 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' was the one that blew them all away.

You'll recall about a month ago we told you about the battle between two 'Hobbits'; that is, Warner Bros. 'The Hobbit' and The Asylum's crude knock-off, 'Age of the Hobbits.' Warner Bros. filed a lawsuit against the smaller studio, known for its "mockbusters," insisting they stop the release of their slightly similarly titled movie, with the idea being that they were infringing on their 'Hobbit' trademark. Meanwhile, The Asylum was all, "What are you talking about, this is a totally different thing!"

It appears as though, if you'll forgive the analogy, in this particular case of David vs. Goliath, Goliath has most definitely won. At least for now.

It has almost exclusively dominated the conversation regarding the highly-anticipated prequel, and today we have Warner Bros. weighing in to assure us that, contrary to some reports, 'The Hobbit' in 48fps will not make you nauseous. Pop culture enthusiasts can be forgiven if they approach Peter Jackson's J.R.R. Tolkien prequel trilogy thinking about 'Star Wars.' Will this next (but previous!) chapter in one of Fandom's key franchises broaden the cinematic universe we love so much, or will this be another case where they should have let enough alone?

Well, as is so frequently the case in life, I can't give you such a black and white answer. For starters, we may not be able to fully analyze 'The Hobbit' until all three chapters are in. Nevertheless here we are and 'An Unexpected Journey' does, indeed, have a lot going for it. It is also saddled with tangents, jabberjaw scenes that never end and far too many beats whose sole function is to remind you how much you love the original 'Lord of the Rings' films.

And while not often taken serious, they've gotten into legal trouble before with the major studios in town ('The Day the Earth Stopped' comes to mind), but this time they're facing their mightiest foe yet in the form of studios Warner Bros., New Line Cinema, MGM and producer Saul Zaentz, who are all looking to halt the release of the Asylum's 'Age of the Hobbits', starring Bai Ling and a host of little people.
