Weekend Box Office Report: Will Smith's 'Focus' Shines
In terms of sheer numbers, this weekend’s box office wasn’t especially impressive. It was fine and Focus opened well, but there weren’t any broken records. There were no incredible signs of a film growing legs and holding on against the odds. However, there was something else worthy of note: three of the top five films at the box office were R-rated, with 50 percent of the top 10 comprised of R-rated films overall. In an age dominated by the PG-13 rating, this is unique and promising. Could studios start to embrace movies made for adults again? Maybe. Who knows? Let’s look at some numbers.

How many times in your life have you snuck up on someone and scared them? Three, maybe four times? The Lazarus Effect is the kind of horror movie where people do that constantly. It’s basically their standard greeting; instead of “Hello!” they jump on people from behind, sometimes while wearing pig masks. Just yesterday we saw the first poster and image from ‘The Lazarus Effect,’ the latest horror flick from Blumhouse Productions, the folks who brought you ‘Insidious’ and last year’s ‘Oculus.’ We were already sold on the film based on the cast alone, but seeing this first trailer really seals the deal. A film in which Mark Duplass and Donald Glover bring a creepy Olivia Wilde back from the dead? We’re totally there.

One of the upcoming horror films that’s definitely on our radar in 2015 is ‘The Lazarus Effect,’ a new film from Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions—the same folks behind ‘Paranormal Activity’ and ‘Oculus’ (as well as awards season favorite ‘Whiplash’). Their latest film has a pretty outstanding cast, including Olivia Wilde, who is featured in the first photo and poster, along with her very black and very terrifying eyeballs.
