The Martian

Good reviews and a phenomenal marketing campaign did their job this weekend. No number of foot-in-mouth moments from Matt Damon could harm the opening weekend of The Martian, which opened in the number one spot at the box office. After a surprisingly robust September, this is another sign that we may very looking at one of the bigger fall movie seasons in quite some time.

This is the most exciting time of the year for anyone who loves film, as critics and journalists no longer have to play the guessing game of what may or may not make it to the Oscars. The awards season frontrunners are already pretty clear, with the exception of a few titles yet to screen for press, including The Revenant, The Hateful Eight, Joy, By the Sea and Concussion. Here’s what your 2016 Oscar categories will most likely look like.

Stranded on Mars with only enough food to last about a year, Matt Damon’s astronaut Mark Watney has to do some seriously creative thinking — or, as the previous trailers suggest, he needs to “science the s—” out of his situation. In the latest clip from The Martian, Damon does a little math and feels confident in his unique botany skills.

Their latest “in-world” video is basically a sleek promotional ad featuring Matt Damon’s astronaut Mark Watney.

We’re a little under a month away from the release of Ridley Scott’s The Martian, which may very well prove to be the director’s best film in years, if the trailers and TV spots are any indication. Everything we’ve seen so far (especially those viral videos) from Scott’s latest looks riveting and exciting, and while the latest TV spot is brief, it does offer a few glimpses of new footage.

So far, every bit of marketing for Ridley Scott’s The Martian has been pretty exciting — between the viral content, deliberately paced release of images and the trailers, someone at 20th Century Fox is well-deserving of a raise. The latest viral video features noted astrophysicist and Cool Guy™ Neil deGrasse Tyson in a fictional episode of StarTalk, examining the Ares 3 mission featured in The Martian.

Honestly, 20th Century Fox hardly needs to hype up the release of Ridley Scott’s The Martian any more than they already have — we’re sold. But today brings a new TV spot for the upcoming sci-fi film, which makes excellent use of Jimi Hendrix’s “All Along the Watchtower” while showing off a little bit of new footage.

A crew of insanely smart scientists travel to a barren alien landscape. After an interstellar storm, one of the crew is left behind and presumed dead. He is, however, very much alive, and slowly begins plotting his return. No, it’s not the story of Doctor Doom in the new Fantastic Four reboot...OK, it is, but it’s also the plot for the upcoming Ridley Scott sci-fi drama The Martian, and today we’ve got a brand new trailer for you.

The more we see of Ridley Scott’s The Martian, the more promising the film looks. Before the official trailer hit, 20th Century Fox released a viral video from the archives of the fictional Ares 3 spacecraft. A second viral video from the archives has arrived online, just as humorous and insightful — if not more so — than the first.
