Not long after The Strangers was released back in 2008, a sequel to Bryan Bertino’s insanely effective horror thriller was put in development. Almost 10 years later, and the first trailer for that sequel has finally arrived — and it handily diminishes some of our skepticism about the follow-up, which Bertino does not appear to be involved with whatsoever (aside from an original screenplay credit). Instead, the sequel was directed by Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down) and written by Ben Ketai (The Forest).

Talk of a sequel had popped up occasionally; ScreenCrush’s last report on developments comes from January 2015, when it was announced that Swiss filmmaker Marcel Langenegger would direct The Strangers 2. Today Deadline gives us an update, with another director attached, Johannes Roberts, and a major star signing on to be terrorized.

When it was released in 2008, ‘The Strangers’ became an instant horror favorite, immediately inspiring talk of a sequel thanks to its thrilling ending—but that’s all it’s been in the last seven years: talk. That appears to have changed, as Relativity Studios has finally hired a director to come aboard the project, which is now officially moving forward, bringing back those masked maniacs to scare our pants off once again.
