Since the box office numbers from last week were not formally released until after the weekend passed, we need to play a quick game of catch-up with 'The Dark Knight Rises.' The third and final of Christopher Nolan's Batman movies opened to $160 million, a number that is staggering, but not record breaking. Did it even stand a chance of breaking the $200 million mark and challenging 'The Avengers' for highest opening weekend of all time? Did the tragic events in Aurora, Colorado have an adverse effect on the opening gross? To that second question: yes. To that first question: no.

The zeitgeist giveth and the zeitgeist taketh away. Fortuitous timing lends some films the aura of relevance; bad timing lends others the stink of impropriety. Released last summer, ‘The Watch’ would have been just another Hollywood action comedy. Released this summer, it’s burdened by all sorts of unwanted and unintended cultural associations. It already endured a title change (from ‘Neighborhood Watch’) after the death of Trayvon Martin. Now this film -- which features a man exaggeratedly grieving for a murdered friend for comic effect and an antisocial dropout who stockpiles weapons -- opens a week after the tragedy in Aurora, Colorado. This poor movie can’t catch a break, which is a shame because it’s actually pretty funny.

SNL’s Digital Shorts mastermind Akiva Schaffer directs the foursome in 20th Century Fox’s sci-fi comedy ‘The Watch,’ a film that follows a neighborhood watch group as they attempt to stave off an alien invasion. We had the opportunity to speak with the director recently about transitioning away from his work on SNL, attempting to wrangle his cast and keeping a foothold in online comedy.

‘The Watch’ remains a tough movie to figure out … and we’re only weeks away from the comedy reaching theaters. Usually by now, a film has laid 90% of its cards on the table. But we’re still not sure if ‘The Watch’ is more raunchy dude humor or whiz-bang sci-fi effects. Or will it be a healthy mix of both? The newest clip sheds a little light on the mystery, shifting focus directly on the “raunchy” rather than the “whiz-bang.” Though there is some whizz.
