FOX’s ‘The X-Files’ revival struggles to stay relevant at first, but feels way less alien embracing the weird fun of its standalone hours. Our early review, before the two-part premiere continues later on tonight!

We can never have too many X-Files revival trailers, especially when the conspiracy goodness starts flowing a week out from its premiere. Not only does the latest bring a bonafide UFO, but also the Smoking Man’s return, while cast and crew drop new info on the FOX revival.

Early word of The X-Files 2016 return has been somewhat less than positive, but if nothing else, ‘90s fans can’t deny the thrill of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reuniting for another go. Neither can Jimmy Kimmel, it seems, watching Mulder and Scully make out in a new X-Files parody from last night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!

As much as FOX’s imminent X-Files revival seeks to answer long-held questions among the fans, the new six-episode series may also attract new audiences to nine seasons’ worth of conspiracy. There’s only so much left to say of FOX’s 2016 X-Files revival until the thing actually premieres on January 24, but by gum, FOX is going to give it a whirl. It’s hard to believe that new X-Files episodes will arrive in just over a month’s time, even as debate rages over the balance between our 2016 revival’s two mythology episodes, and standalone “monster of the week” hours within. Now, a new featurette for the January premiere sees cast and crew discussing the approach, and what great X-Files mysteries might end up solved.

The limited six-episode nature of The X-Files 2016 return means a limited reserve of footage with which to tease the January premiere, but Mulder and Scully can certainly find other ways to build the hype. Case in point, UFO sightings are popping up all over the country, according to the latest X-Files return teaser.

We’ve seen plenty of X-Files footage and teasers by now, but with only six episodes arriving in 2016, and only two of them mythology-based at that, one wonders how many real spoilers will emerge from that long-dusty file cabinet. Plenty, as it turns out, thanks to a spoilery new super-quick teaser from Gillian Anderson!

Much as we never thought we’d say it, The X-Files has shown us enough of its six-episode revival by all the weekly trailers accompanying Gotham. That said, at least one shadowy, smokey figure has yet to show his face, remedied by the first official key art of FOX’s 2016 revival, even without an official explanation.
