Sibling Revivalry: Watching 'Top Gun' For the First Time

In this installment of Sibling Revivalry, Lindsay and I tackle reader Alex’s suggestion – the beloved 1986 Tony Scott classic ‘Top Gun.’
Lindsay was far less trepidatious about this one. Probably because it stars a hunky cast, most notably: young and spritely versions of Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards.
Turns out, she didn’t just see past the film’s “cheesy” exterior, hunky pilots and Iceman’s “Jersey Shore blowout” to enjoy some of its underlying themes, she also dropped some major knowledge on me regarding the way films affected her adolescence. Without further ado, here’s our conversation after my little sister’s first viewing of ‘Top Gun’…26 years after its release.

Let's be honest: 'Rock of Ages' doesn't look so hot. At least not based on the film's trailer. But if you've ever had a jones to hear Tom Cruise sing Def Leppard or Russell Brand sing REO Speedwagon, then you're in luck. The details for the 'Rock of Ages' soundtrack have been released that show us exxactly what we'll be listening to and who'll be singing it, when the film hits theaters.

They're also featured in the trailer for 'Rock of Ages' the Adam Shankman-directed musical starring Malin Ackerman, Alec Baldwin, Mary J. Blige, Diego Boneta, Russell Brand, Bryan Cranston, Paul Giamatti, Julianne Hough, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and one Mr. Tom Cruise.

After a long year chasing names like Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale to star opposite Beyonce Knowles in Clint Eastwood's remake of 'A Star is Born,' WB is reaching out to Tom Cruise to fill the shoes once worn by Fredric March, James Mason, and Kris Kristofferson in three previous iterations of the classic story.
