Over the weekend I had dinner with some friends (yeah, I don’t live in the internet; crazy, right?) and the topic of the Toni Erdmann remake came up, which led to brainstorming which writers and directors might be perfect for taking on a three-hour German father-daughter relationship comedy (Sarah Polley) — and which ones will likely wind up with the job (someone like Larry Charles or Paul Feig, I bet). And while Jack Nicholson emerging from retirement is super exciting, one friend suggested that, since the film doesn’t even have a script or director yet, Nicholson will back out at the last minute and the role will go to Bill Murray. As it turns out, what really happened was sort of the reverse.

While many were a little perturbed at the idea of an American remake of last year’s award-winning German-Austrian comedy Toni Erdmann, and that it’s happening so soon after the original was released, we have some extremely good news today: Jack Nicholson, whose last starring role was in 2010, has been set to star in our Toni Erdmann.

The actual Academy Award nominations won’t be announced until January 24, but plenty of categories get a jump on the process by winnowing down the slate of eligible films to a shortlist from which the five nominees can be culled. The Animated Feature category should come forward with their shortlist any day now, the Documentary Feature category feature has already done so, and last night, some global talents of cinema found themselves shut out in the cold when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released their nine choices for the Foreign Language Film shortlist.

What a difference six months makes. Back in the summer, the world of film was all gloom and doom. Television was great; the movies were terrible. One respected critic even speculated that someday the world would look back at 2016 as “the year that movies died.”

The end-of-year cavalcade of awards bestowments and ranked lists continues apace today, with one of the more prestigious critical bodies weighing in. Sight and Sound, the official film magazine of the BFI, runs an annual poll of United Kingdom-based writers and compiles a list of the year’s 20 finest films from the results. (Naturally, their cutoff dates for what qualifies as a “2016 release” are based on British release dates, which is how Olivier Assayas’ Personal Shopper landed on this list, though it will receive a U.S. run in the spring.) It’s a nicely balanced list well-stocked with festival favorites, but the most notable (and heartening) aspect of the ranking must be the strong showing from female filmmakers, who make up three of the top five selections.

Along with the great deluge of awards programs, the end of 2016 brings best-of-the-year lists from just about every publication under the sun. Those film obsessives who catalogue such things eagerly await rulings from newspapers of record, major film magazines, and critics’ organizations, and the ball just got rolling earlier today with announcements from a pair of reputable sources. (We continue to patiently await High Times’ Top 10 Films of 2016 list, however. Word is they were big into Manchester by the Sea, but c’mon, who wasn’t?)
