Transformers: Age of Extinction

'Transformers: Age of Extinction' is the sequel/reboot to the massively successful 'Transformers' franchise. Though director Michael Bay is returning, the majority of the characters from the original trilogy, namely Shia LaBeouf, are gone and have been replaced by a new set of characters, led by Mark Wahlberg. Also new are the 'Transformers 4' robots, which are promised to have an all-new look and all-new lineup. The film begins after an epic battle that left a great city torn, but with the world saved. As humanity picks up the pieces, a shadowy group reveals itself in an attempt to control the direction of history… while an ancient, powerful new menace sets Earth in its crosshairs. With help from a new cast of humans, Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen) and the Autobots rise to meet their most fearsome challenge yet. In an incredible adventure, they are swept up in a war of good and evil, ultimately leading to a climactic battle across the world.

Look, everyone knows that it's your obligation as a human being to go see a new 'Transfomrers' movie when it comes out whether you want to or not. It's the only explanation for the success of the past three films (since no one actually likes them) and it's the only explanation for the massive first weekend of 'Transformers: Age of Extinction,' which had the biggest opening of 2014 so far.

It’s a strange time we live in where two of the non-‘Transformers’ movies released this weekend are considered small indie films, yet one is a romantic comedy (sort of) staring Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler and the other - 'Snowpiercer' - is an action movie starring the guy who plays Captain America.

After watching the first three ‘Transformers’ films and sitting through the fourth -- ‘Age of Extinction’ -- it becomes less and less clear who these films are really made for and what Bay’s grand cinematic purpose is beyond cashing in on brand recognition. The films are too mature and crude for children, yet too infantile for adults.

On Friday, the fourth movie in the live-action Transformers series of films opens in theaters. This one is called ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction,’ and, like its predecessors, it’s poised to become one of the biggest films of the year, if not the biggest. What’s odd is that in the buildup for this movie, I haven’t heard Shia LaBeouf’s name once -- you know, the guy who was the star of the previous three ‘Transformers’ movies.
