Some people look forward to the next Marvel movie, some anticipate the newest Star Wars entry, and then there are people like me, who count down the days until the new Yorgos Lanthimos film. Finally, we have our very first trailer for The Killing of Sacred Deer, the latest twisted nightmare from the Greek filmmaker.

It’s (almost) the most wonderful time of the year…Fantastic Fest 2017 is right around in the corner, and if the first wave of film programming is any indication, this year’s lineup is going to be pretty stellar. The initial roster boasts the usual assortment of intriguing genre fare (like Takashi Miike’s 100th film, if you can believe it) alongside festival favorites and potential awards contenders, including new films from Yorgos Lanthimos, Ruben Ostlund, Martin McDonagh and more — so much more!

Even by its normally prestigious standards, this was a pretty exciting year for the Cannes Film Festival. Surprise selections, an atypically fun jury, and countless debates about Netflix and the future of film exhibition all combined to make headlines all around the world. Oh, and there were also a handful of the most highly anticipated films of 2017 receiving serious recognition from the festival. You know, no big deal.

The 2017 Cannes Film Festival lineup (announced earlier this morning) is stacked with some of our most highly-anticipated titles of the year, including new films from Todd Haynes, Sofia Coppola and Yorgos Lanthimos. The director of The Lobster has returned with The Killing of a Sacred Deer, which reunites him with Colin Farrell — who appears to be playing yet another sad sack for his second outing with the director, and if anyone knows how to make the most of mopey, schlubby Colin Farrell, it’s Lanthimos.

Good morning! Chances are that you’re just getting up and at ’em now, but a few time zones ahead in sunny France, the film industry has had a busy day. This morning saw the official announcement of the Cannes Film Festival’s class of 2017, with the full Competition and Un Certain Regard slates announced by head honcho Thierry Frémaux in a live press conference in the wee small hours of this morning. As ever, the Competition lineup (the most prestigious program in the world’s most prestigious film festival) boasts a deep roster of cinema’s most respected auteurs, ready to pull back the curtain on some tantalizing-sounding new projects. But let’s not talk around the real news here: Adam Sandler’s going to Cannes, baby.

True Detective didn’t exactly pan out for Colin Farrell, but Amazon might welcome him back to TV. The Lobster star is re-teaming with director Yorgos Lanthimos for a new Amazon limited series about the Iran-Contra affair, with Farrell portraying Oliver North.

Kirsten Dunst made a literal and figurative killing with her work on FX’s Fargo, and TV appears to have rubbed off on her. Dunst has teamed with George Clooney’s production company to star in and produce a new dark comedy for AMC, given the unusual title of On Becoming a God In Central Florida.

Don’t call it a comeback. No, really — you may think that ’90s darling Alicia Silverstone hasn’t been doing much acting in recent years, and while that’s partially true, you just haven’t been looking in the right places. The actress appears to be choosing more interesting roles as of late, and after recently appearing in the James Franco festival fave King Cobra, she’s turned her sights to one of our most compelling modern filmmakers: Yorgos Lanthimos.

Yorgos Lanthimos is responsible for such darkly satirical films as Dogtooth and Alps, but his latest might be his most heartfelt, perceptive and hilarious film yet. The trailer for The Lobster asks you to envision a world in which Colin Farrell is a mustached, lonely schlub faced with a rather alarming predicament: he has 45 days to find a mate, or he'll be transformed into an animal — at least he gets to choose the animal.
