The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are street-level vigilantes, blue-collar crime fighters toiling away in the dirtiest parts of New York City, and the latest batch of posters for their new film is heavily inspired by their lifestyle. Not only does it fit the personalities of the characters, it's far more dynamic than typical Photoshopped junk.

The work of artist Mike Johnston, the posters are currently on display at the HOPE Outdoor Gallery in Austin, Texas, a space dedicated to outdoor art, murals and graffiti. In addition to one poster that has all of the turtles together (in dynamic poses, of course), he created individual character posters for Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, Michelangelo and their arch-nemesis, Shredder. The heavy inks and spare use of color remind us of that excellent (and frequently stolen) poster for 'The Wolverine,' which also looked like it belonged on the side of a building rather than the interior of a multiplex.

In other words, it's so much cooler than anything that will actually come out of Paramount's marketing department.

Here's the official synopsis for 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles':

The city needs heroes. Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April O’Neil (Megan Fox) and her wise-cracking cameraman Vern Fenwick (Will Arnett) to save the city and unravel Shredder’s diabolical plan. Based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Characters Created by PETER LAIRD and KEVIN EASTMAN with a Screenplay by JOSH APPELBAUM & ANDRÉ NEMEC and EVAN DAUGHERTY, Producer MICHAEL BAY (the blockbuster Transformers franchise) and director JONATHAN LIEBESMAN (Wrath of the Titans) bring Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the popular franchise that has captivated audiences of all ages for decades, into the 21st century.

'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' will open in theaters on August 8. In the meantime, peruse the art below and click on 'em to check out the details.
