FX’s The Americans has been building tension to an all-time high in the final episodes of Season 4, but we knew the moderately-rated spy drama would have to bring the Cold War to an end eventually. So it is, that FX has issued a two-season renewal to The Americans, ending the series altogether in 2018.

Per FX’s official word, The Americans will return for a full 13-episode Season 5 in 2017, closing out the series in 2018 with a 10-episode sixth, and final season. Widely regarded as one of TV’s best dramas, the series has often faced uncertainty of additional seasons, with showrunners often suggesting a run of 5-6 years.

Says FX:

Through its first four seasons, critics have lauded The Americans as one of the best shows on television and, remarkably, a series that keeps getting better every year. All credit for that achievement goes to everyone who has worked on the show, and especially Co-Showrunners Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields, Graham Yost, our brilliant stars Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys, Noah Emmerich, Allison Wright, Holly Taylor, Annet Mahendru and the ensemble cast for their incomparable performances every season.

We have no doubt that this two-season order will allow Joe and Joel to tell this story to its perfect conclusion. On behalf of our producing partners at Fox 21 Television Studios and Amblin TV, we look forward to a brilliant final act of the Jennings family saga.

In the meantime, three episodes remain in Season 4 (including tonight!), with a finale set for June 8. We’ve plenty of time, but was Season 6 the right time to end The Americans? Will 2018 be known as the year the Jennings ended the Cold War?
