It's been a while since we'd heard anything about Paul Schrader's 'The Canyons,' which stars Lindsay Lohan and James Deen in another Bret Easton Ellis tale of wasted youth, but now there's a trailer from IFC (who will be releasing the film), and the film is now set to hit theaters in less than a month.
But considering it is IFC, that means the film will most likely play theatrically in New York and LA, but be seen by most audiences on VOD. The trailer is notable for featuring a lot of footage that doesn't appear to be from the movie (though it's hard to say), starting with shots of wrecked movie theaters that suggest the end of times. The sense of apocalypse is not surprising considering how hard it was to get this movie made, with the film's troubled production chronicled in a gripping New York Times article. Compared to the earlier promo trailers, this is obviously more polished, but it spends a good chunk of its running time obfuscating the film itself.
Regardless, this curio is the sort of thing that many will check out, even if only out of morbid curiosity. If nothing else, it promises not to be boring. 'The Canyons' is due out August 2. Here's the film's synopsis:
Christian is a young LA trust-fund dude who's financing a horror film simply to keep his dad off his back about doing something with his life. He has been dating Tara for about a year — she was an aspiring actress/model who settled down with him when the reality of the business became apparent to her. She's now just Christian's bored plaything. Christian's assistant Gina is casting the film with assistance from Tara. Gina is pushing Ryan, her boyfriend and struggling actor, for the lead. Unbeknownst to either Christian or Gina, Ryan and Tara were a couple three years ago. When Ryan came back into Tara's life during the auditions for the movie, they reignited their affair. But Christian, a dangerous control-freak, finds out about the affair and starts playing cruel mind games with both Tara and Ryan, which escalate into an act of bloody violence.
