Here's the thing about the new 'The Conjuring' trailer: it looks scary. Like, really scary. Like "oh no I need to sleep with the light on" scary. In a summer full of giant robots and superheroes, it looks like a nice splash of creepy cold water to the face. Check out the trailer for yourself below.

Although you can write off most "based on a true story" horror movies as complete exaggeration, 'The Conjuring' is based on real life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, who explored, among other places, the infamous 'Amityville Horror' house. We're sure that much of 'The Conjuring' was invented for the screen, but the implication that this is based on one of the couple's most horrifying and less known cases is fascinating, especially since the real life Lorraine Warren has been involved with the film.

Anyway, 'The Conjuring' finds the Warrens (Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson) looking into a haunted farmhouse, where all kinds of violent spirits have been terrorizing a family by doing what movie ghosts do. They drag people out of beds, appear very suddenly, etc. However, in the hands of 'Insidious' director James Wan, these typical scares feel like they have a fresh coat of paint. The '70s setting helps too, placing the characters in a world where help is never a cell phone call away.

'The Conjuring' opens on July 19th.
