Lifetime already delivered their true-life version of the notorious Amanda Knox case, but director Michael Winterbottom has arrived with his own fictionalized take on the murder scandal. In the first trailer for The Face of an Angel, Daniel Brühl plays a filmmaker who travels to Italy to cover a murder trial involving an American student—only her name isn’t Amanda Knox. It’s Elizabeth. The names and some details are changed, but yes, this is essentially the Amanda Knox trial.

The trailer for The Face of an Angel showcases Winterbottom’s excellent cinematography skills in this dark thriller of sorts, which splits its time (perhaps unevenly) between Brühl’s filmmaker and the actual murder trial. Brühl portrays Thomas, who goes to Italy to cover the scandal. While there, he works alongside Kate Beckinsale and falls for a beautiful young bartender played by Cara Delevingne.

Winterbottom previously directed The Trip and more recently its sequel, The Trip to Italy—though this is clearly nothing like that delightful romp through the countryside with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon. But the director has also previously showcased solid dramatic/thriller chops with films like A Mighty Heart and The Killer Inside Me.

The above trailer is the official U.K. version, as the film prepares to hit cinemas across the pond on March 27. The Face of an Angel will hit theaters and VOD in the U.S. on June 19.
