Sometimes you discover something in your life that you didn’t know you needed until you finally have it. Take, for example, the brand new trailer for The Fate of the Furious. If you’d made me list the 100 different things I want from an action movie, I never would have thought to request a scene where a submarine chases a fleet of vehicles across an ice field. Now that I’ve seen the first trailer for the film, I kind of wish every action movie was just that scene for ninety minutes.

If this trailer is any indication, the premise of The Fate of the Furious seems to be pretty simple. Flip the switch  —  make Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto the bad guy  —  and then watch as everyone explodes, punches, and shoots their way to trying to save him from himself. It’s a conceit that the Fast and Furious franchise has already used well with Michelle Rodriguez’s Letty; from a practical standpoint, it also helps divide up the screen time among the actors, allowing Diesel to play the role of the bad guy and Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, and Ludacris to all play the heroes as they try to capture their friend alive. Throw a little Dwayne Johnson and Charlize Theron into the mix  —  and add in Kurt Russell and Jason Statham, because why not?  —  and you’ve got yourself the recipe for one of the biggest blockbuster action movies of the year.

It was also nice to see the trailer give a brief nod to the late Paul Walker. For many franchises, the death of a major star would be a crippling blow, but the Fast and the Furious franchise seems to have embraced its ever-expanding cast without missing a beat. This is a franchise that has already come back from the dead once before; if Vin Diesel and company can manage to reassemble their ragtag group of actors and make Fast & Furious one of the breakout hits of the decade, then I have no doubt that they’ll find a way to honor Paul Walker’s memory while still moving the franchise forward.
