Paul Rudd can make just about anything better, including this underwhelming trailer for Netflix’s latest original film, The Fundamentals of Caring. The impossibly charming and seemingly ageless (and possibly immortal?) actor teams up with Submarine star Craig Roberts for an unexpected buddy road trip dramedy, picking up a pregnant Selena Gomez and a Slim Jim along the way.

Based on the Jonathan Evison novel, The Fundamentals of Caring stars Rudd as a former writer who takes a job as a caregiver for a cynical 18-year-old (Roberts). The pair embark on a silly road trip to visit the dumbest landmarks in America, and as you might expect, there’s some bonding and overcoming of differences and the usual odd couple stuff. Selena Gomez stars as a young woman who hitches a ride with the duo and helps them expand their emotional vocabulary — or something like that:

Ben is a retired writer who becomes a caregiver after suffering a personal tragedy. After 6 weeks of training, Ben meets his first client, Trevor, a foul-mouthed 18-year-old with muscular dystrophy. One paralyzed emotionally, one paralyzed physically, Ben and Trevor take an impromptu road trip to all the places Trevor has become obsessed with while watching the local news, including their holy grail: the World’s Deepest Pit. Along the way, they pick up a sassy runaway and a mother-to-be who help test the pair’s survival skills outside of their calculated existence as they come to understand the importance of hope and true friendship.

It’s a great cast, and it’s hard not to love Rudd in just about anything, but the trailer doesn’t do a great job of making this one look like a must-see. The Fundamentals of Caring hits Netflix on June 3.
