The latest addition to cinema’s western revival is The Hollow Point, which, like this summer’s surprisingly solid Hell or High Water, takes those classic sensibilities and puts them in a contemporary — and violent — context. Judging by the first trailer for the upcoming thriller, things are going to get pretty bloody in this timely tale of crime on the U.S. and Mexico border.

There’s a new sheriff in town and it’s Patrick Wilson, looking quite at home in that uniform after his stint on Fargo Season 2. Wilson plays a newcomer brought in to replace Ian McShane’s loose cannon-type in a small town near the border, where criminals smuggle guns down to Mexico to arm the cartels. Directed by Gonzalo López-Gallego (Open Grave), The Hollow Point looks like your fairly average crime thriller with a bit of extra violence thrown in for good measure. Hopefully there’s something to set this one apart aside from its great cast, which also includes John Leguizamo, Jim Belushi and Lynn Collins.

McShane in particular seems to be relishing his return to western-ish fare, and all that boozing and grit and swearing should feel pretty familiar to fans of Deadwood. With someone as big and bold as McShane, Wilson is a solid pick to play straight cop, and if I’m not mistaken, the trailer seems to give away a big turn for his character — or maybe it’s intentionally misleading.

In addition to The Hollow Point, which hits theaters on December 16, we also have another border thriller to look forward to with Jonas Cuaron’s Desierto, which arrives on October 14.
