The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 is going to be one the highest grossing films of 2015 no matter what, so every trailer and poster can’t help but feel ever-so-slightly redundant. Oh, remember that movie that you and everyone you know is already going to see anyway? Here’s an unnecessary reminder that it exists! And yet Lionsgate has been playing fans like a fiddle with their marketing campaign, and the latest trailer is one seriously impressive advertisement.

Praising a trailer is just like judging a book by its cover – the worst movies can always look great in two-minute chunks. And yet the new Mockingjay trailer is undeniably slick and exciting stuff, treating the grand finale of the Hunger Games series as a genuine, unmissable event. Every actor, from Jennifer Lawrence to Josh Hutcherson to the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, gets a moment. The action look crazy. The scale looks bigger than the past three movies. Most importantly, it looks refreshingly different from the previous films, taking the storyline about as far as it could possibly go from the original concept. If the film maintains the novel’s ballsy and divisive ending, this could be something very special.

Here’s the official synopsis:

With the nation of Panem in a full scale war, Katniss confronts President Snow [Donald Sutherland] in the final showdown. Teamed with a group of her closest friends – including Gale [Liam Hemsworth], Finnick [Sam Claflin], and Peeta [Josh Hutcherson] – Katniss goes off on a mission with the unit from District 13 as they risk their lives to liberate the citizens of Panem, and stage an assassination attempt on President Snow who has become increasingly obsessed with destroying her. The mortal traps, enemies, and moral choices that await Katniss will challenge her more than any arena she faced in The Hunger Games.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 opens on November 20, 2015.
