It's been a troubling few years for game and console sales, but June provided a slight glimmer of hope as sales finally increased after months of diminishing returns.

According to the NPD Group's latest analysis (courtesy of Game Informer), overall game sales for June totaled $593.3 million. While that's still down 15 percent year-over-year, sales did manage to recover from May's abysmal $386.3 million in sales. Microsoft once again held onto its top spot in the console wars, an achievement its maintained for 30 consecutive months. The 3DS actually outsold the Xbox 360 225,000 to 140,000, but handhelds are tracked in a different category.

Where the June sales really get interesting is in individual game sales. For the first time this generation, a different console exclusive grabbed one of the top three spots. Most of the time, a multiplatfrom title or two manages to make it in there because of the wider availability. In June however, The Last of Us, Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition took the top of the charts by storm. There are plenty of familiar faces rounding out the rest of the top ten, but we still don't know how well each game sold as those numbers are almost never disclosed.
