Keeping in mind that 'The Maze Runner' (Wes Ball's adaptation of James Dashner's young-adult sci-fi novel) doesn't even hit theaters until September of next year, 20th Century Fox is already looking to bring the second book in the four-part series, 'The Scorch Trials,' to the big screen. It's probably running after 'The Hunger Games'' box office gold.

Principal photography on 'The Maze Runner' wrapped not too long ago with a cast that includes 'Teen Wolf' star Dylan O'Brien in the lead, as well as Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Will Poulter and Aml Ameen. Will these actors be back for 'The Maze Runner 2'? Probably a handful, if the screenplay follows the book.

While 'The Maze Runner' sees a group of teens dropped in the middle of a maze with minimal hope of escaping (potential SPOILERS ahead), 'The Scorch Trials' sees the main group finally escaping, only to then face the desolate territory of a deserted planet. Deadline reports that T.S. Nowlin, who worked on 'Fantastic Four,' is adapting 'The Scorch Trials' for the big screen, with Ball supervising him. Nowlin also worked with Noah Oppenheim and Grant Myers on the script for the first film.

Studios are hellbent on chasing after 'The Hunger Games' in terms of dystopian-set young-adult storylines, in an era post-'The Twilight Saga' and 'Harry Potter.' Aside from 'Catching Fire' and the two-part 'Mockingjay' installments for 'The Hunger Games,' Summit's 'Divergent' franchise is already working on the sequel, 'Insurgence,' though Sony's planned 'Mortal Instruments' sequel and spinoff aren't looking too good. Still, this seems a little too preemptive for 'The Maze Runner,' as the first trailer hasn't even hit yet! (Hint, hint, Wes Ball.)

'The Maze Runner' is currently set for release on September 19, 2014.
