If you weren’t watching Ryan Gosling on SNL last night, then you missed the first TV spot for The Nice Guys, the new dark crime comedy from writer / director Shane Black, featuring Gosling and Russell Crowe. It’s a little shorter and more sanitized than that amazing red band trailer from a couple of days ago, but it’s still quite…nice.

After seeing Gosling crack up in basically every sketch on SNL (even the digital short!), you have to wonder what it’s like to try and make a movie with him. The actor stars in Black’s latest as a private eye who teams up with Crowe’s fixer in 1970s Los Angeles to investigate a young woman’s disappearance at the behest of her mother, who believes her daughter got caught up in some mob business. It’s an unlikely buddy pairing, as Crowe is sent to shatter Gosling’s arm, only to find out that the guy he just assaulted is the only man who can help him solve his latest case.

It’s the sort of darkly comedic, noir-influenced, buddy investigation story that Black excels at, and it’s easy to see the similarities in tone and style between this and Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. And man, that pool shot is so out there — can’t wait to see what that’s all about.

The Nice Guys also stars Kim Basinger and Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers), and arrives on May 20, 2016. Someone speed up the next six months so we can see this already.
