The CW has achieved a modicum of success in its most recent run, scoring hits with show's like 'Arrow' and its only real casualty as that of freshman medical drama 'Emiliy Owens, M.D.' Still, if you want to score a hit, use what you know, right? Hence, the network has begun optioning mega-hit series 'The Vampire Diaries' for its own spin-off series, tentatively titled 'The Originals,' to be introduced in a backdoor pilot later this season. Find out how 'The Originals' connects to 'The Vampire Diaries' inside!

Fans of The CW's 'The Vampire Diaries,' this is your lucky day. Not only is the Kevin Williamson-produced vampire drama enjoying its fourth season, but new word from The Hollywood Reporter says that The CW has begun development of a potential spin-off series to follow fan-favorite character Klaus (Joseph Morgan) in his adventures with supernatural family 'The Originals.'

The concept will be introduced in a backdoor pilot episode of 'The Vampire Diaries' airing April 25, and will follow Klaus as he "returns to the supernatural melting pot that is the French Quarter of New Orleans, a town he helped build centuries ago, and is reunited with his diabolical former protege Marcel." Recent 'Vampire Diaries' series regular Phoebe Tonkin will reprise her role as werewolf character Hayley, as well.

Should The CW decide to take 'The Originals' to series, 'Vampire Diaries' executive producer and episode writer Julie Plec will serve as showrunner, with Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo acting as executive producers.
