Doug Liman is kind of a beast. Before the Edge of Tomorrow director’s next Tom Cruise project, American Made (formerly titled Mena), hits theaters, we’re getting another Liman action flick: The Wall. The first official trailer for one of two new Liman films arriving in 2017 has debuted online, giving us a sneak peak at a fairly simple dramatic thriller concept about two soldiers, a sniper and one very deadly standoff.

The Wall stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson and John Cena as a pair of soldiers forced to contend with an Iraqi sniper on their own in the middle of a fairly open space with little cover. It’s like The Shallows, but the shark is a sniper and Blake Lively is Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and the rock is the titular wall — or what’s left of it. A couple of things stand out about this trailer: Taylor-Johnson’s countrified accent is way better than Andrew Garfield’s in Hacksaw Ridge (actually, I prefer Taylor-Johnson’s American accent to his native British one in most things). Second, I cannot take John Cena seriously.

Look, I know he’s trying, and I respect it, but we’ve seen his dramatic action-thriller skills before, and it’s just not nearly as effective as comedic Cena in stuff like Trainwreck and Sisters.

Aside from that, I’m intrigued by The Wall’s simple premise, especially coming from Liman — a director known for films like Edge of Tomorrow, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Jumper. Amazon Studios has exclusive streaming rights to The Wall, which hits theaters on March 10, 2017.

Liman has become surprisingly prolific following the success of Edge of Tomorrow: In addition to The Wall, he’s releasing American Made on September 29, 2017, and is set to direct Guillermo del Toro’s Justice League Dark; the Chaos Walking YA adaptation starring Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland; and an Edge of Tomorrow sequel, along with a couple of other potential projects.
