Once Mads Mikkelsen passed on 'Thor: The Dark World,' we've been wondering who will fill his shoes, on top of wondering what character he'd be playing. The answer has been revealed: it's now Christopher Eccleston who will be playing Malekith The Accursed.

This casting break comes from The Hollywood Reporter. Wikipedia tells us that Malekith "is ruler of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim, and has come into conflict with Thor. He once wielded the Casket of Ancient Winters." and that the character has struck alliances with Loki before, so it seems fitting.

Though many know Eccleston as one of the Doctors from 'Doctor Who,' he's also had a career playing villains in bad movies like 'G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra' (where he was Destro), and the 'Gone in 60 Seconds' remake. This came after being an indie movie star in films like 'Shallow Grave' and the Oscar-nominated 'Elizabeth.' Eccleston has proved to be a solid actor who can rise to the occasion, but it seems much of his career has been about finding work.

'Thor: The Dark World' is scheduled to start shooting any day now (last we heard was August, so some time this month) with 'Game of Thrones' director Alan Taylor at the helm, and a scheduled release date of November 8, 2013.
