We wouldn’t have minded if True Detective Season 3 made Mahershala Ali the sole star, but the Moonlight Oscar-winner has some company after all. Fantastic Beasts and The Girlfriend Experience star Carmen Ejogo has become the second member of Season 3’s cast, taking the role of the female lead.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ejogo will take the role of Amelia Reardon, an Arkansas schoolteacher with a connection to two missing children in 1980. Ali portrays Northwest Arkansaw state police detective Wayne Hays, while the third season is said to chronicle “a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.”

Series creator Nic Pizzolatto will serve as Season 3’s primary writer, aided by Deadwood boss David Milch, who will direct the fourth episode. Pizzolatto will also showrun and direct with Jeremy Saulnier, while additional executive producers include Scott Stephens, Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey and original director Cary Fukunaga. Pizzolatto maintains an overall development deal at HBO, though he left behind a Perry Mason series with Robert Downey Jr. producing and starring to concentrate on True Detective.

We’ll likely hear more before the year is out, but will True Detective Season 3 lean more toward its first or second year?
