There are several reasons to be excited for Kingsman: The Golden Circle (mostly every name on the cast list), not the least of which is that it’s the first time that Matthew Vaughn has returned to direct a sequel to one of his own films. After disappointing follow-ups to X-Men: First Class and Kick-Ass, Vaughn’s involvement in The Golden Circle has us feeling far more optimistic about Eggsy’s next mission. And it looks as though Vaughn is feeling pretty good about it, too, because he’s already cooked up an idea for a third Kingsman movie.

Vaughn has made a habit of avoiding sequels, but it seems like The Golden Circle has changed his mind — so much so that he may even return to direct Kingsman 3. While speaking at a footage presentation in London (via Deadline), Vaughn revealed that he’s already come up with an idea for a third chapter in the series with co-writer Jane Goldman:

Weirdly while we were writing Kingsman 2, we were thinking of Kingsman 3 as well, which is odd. We’ve got a big idea for that. This is sort of the bridge and if we can pull this off, we’ll make another one.

Vaughn went on to explain that he was initially “hesitant” to return for The Golden Circle because sequels are “normally bigger but not necessarily better.”

The first Kingsman was a surprise hit at the box office, and proved that there’s a pretty hefty audience for atypical action flicks with an R-rated sense of humor — in February, no less. It also helped pave the way for Deadpool, which sought to replicate Kingsman’s success with its own February release, wildly surpassing expectations.

If The Golden Circle performs as well as the first Kingsman (or better), Fox will most likely want another sequel, and it seems like Vaughn is game.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle stars Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Jeff Bridges, Channing Tatum and Halle Berry, and hits theaters on September 22.
