It’s been a minute (or several) since we’ve heard anything new from War for the Planet of the Apes, but Matt Reeves’ follow-up to 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes finally has an official synopsis — and just in time for its appearance at New York Comic Con next week. Oh, and by the way, War for the Planet of the Apes is heading to NYCC next week, which means we should be hearing a whole lot more about the exciting new sequel very soon.

20th Century Fox released an official synopsis for War for the Planet of the Apes, which sees Andy Serkis reprising the role of Caesar for another installment in the franchise. The description is in keeping with Serkis’ previous comments about the sequel, which sees Caesar continuing to struggle in his powerful leadership position:

In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.

That “ruthless Colonel” will be played by Woody Harrelson, while Steve Zahn will play a new ape character. In addition to revealing the synopsis, 20th Century Fox announced plans to bring War for the Planet of the Apes to New York Comic Con, where Reeves, Serkis and producer Dylan Clark will debut a behind-the-scenes featurette and “never before seen footage” — a teaser perhaps, or just some unused / deleted scenes from a previous film?

The panel takes place on Thursday, October 6 at 8:30PM at the Regal E-Walk Theater. War for the Planet of the Apes hits theaters on July 14, 2017.
