The time for War is finally here…OK, sure, there’s been bloodshed and skirmishes and battles, but what’s happening in the third installment of the rebooted Apes franchise is flat-out warfare. As Andy Serkis’ iconic protagonist says in the new trailer for Matt Reeves’ sequel, Caesar didn’t start this war, and while you probably expect him to follow that up with, “but I’m going to finish it,” it hasn’t come to that just yet.

But it definitely seems to be heading that way in War for the Planet of the Apes, which co-stars Woody Harrelson as a new antagonist who clearly takes a page from Colonel Kurtz’s demented playbook in Apocalypse Now. (And if Kong: Skull Island wasn’t your jam, rest assured that you’ll enjoy at least one fantasy-action flick that references Francis Ford Coppola’s Vietnam epic this year…) Also returning for the Apes sequel are Judy Greer, Terry Notary and Karin Konoval, with Steve Zahn playing the role of a new monkey character.

Here’s the official synopsis for the highly-anticipated sequel:

In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.

War for the Planet of the Apes hits theaters on July 14.
