In the weekly column Extra Credit, Charles Bramesco recommends supplemental viewing for moviegoers whose interests have been piqued by a given week’s big new release.

There’s a new motion picture coming out this Friday called Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Perhaps you have heard of it! I’ve tried to remain unsullied by spoilers during the endless lead-up to the release, so from what I understand, the hero of this film is a small penguin-guinea pig hybrid known as a Porg, who must defeat or possibly romance Adam Driver. The details are still a little fuzzy.

The latest installment has been subtitled The Last Jedi, a curiously common move in the annals of movie-naming. A glance would suggest that Hollywood is obsessed with finality; search “the last” on IMDb and dozens of suggested titles pop up, from Oscar winners to mortifying melodramas (watch Sean Penn’s The Last Face drunk with a group of friends; it’s the funniest movie about African humanitarian aid ever made). In the spirit of succumbing to the ubiquitous powers of the War that is Star, I‘ve taken this week to compile some other “last” movies. This is the beginning of the ends:
