Mark Hamill Hints That ‘Last Jedi’ Will Answer Your Questions About Rey’s Past

There are a million reasons to want to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi, most of them involving porgs. Among the non-porg-related reasons, maybe the biggest is the chance to learn the true history of Rey, Daisy Ridley’s mysterious orphan, who grew into a budding Jedi hero over the course of J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Flashbacks and dialogue hinted that Rey’s past is hugely important to who she is and why is she is so deeply connected to the Force. But how is she connected? And to who? And how are the porgs involved? (Okay, maybe not that last one so much.)

According to a new piece about the connections between Rey and Luke Skywalker in Entertainment Weekly, The Last Jedi is going to answer a lot of these questions. One of the biggest, of course is who are Rey’s parents and is one of them Luke Skywalker? After Ridley described Rey as “one girl, who [Luke] doesn’t know,” Hamill responded “But does he not know her?” Hmmm....

That’s a question Star Wars fans have been debating for two years. Soon they’ll learn the answer. A big part of Rey’s future will be uncovering her own past: Who is connected to her? Where did she come from? And why was she cast away? As she tries to pick up her own pieces, she may find they fit together well with the remnants of Luke Skywalker. Working together, they may become whole again.

Hmmmmmmmmmm...

Hamill also notes that Luke “made a huge mistake in thinking that his nephew was the chosen one,” comparing his journey with Kylo Ren to the one undertaken many films and years ago by Obi-Wan and a young Luke (and, one has to infer, between a young Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker, Luke’s pops). There’s more about Luke’s guilt about the whole incident than we know, according to EW. There is also apparently “more to it than the film itself will reveal...”

Well, sure. Gotta save something for Episode IX. Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in theaters on December 15.
