The endless saga of whether or not 'Ghostbusters 3' will ever see the light of a movie projector continues to this day. Now a pop culture icon has sent a cryptic signal indicating that he may be the person who can boldly take the franchise where it's never gone before.

'Ghostbusters 3' has been held up for years because of one person -- Bill Murray. The star has refused to commit to returning to the series, and there's even a famous story floating around (never officially confirmed) that he tore up the script co-star Dan Aykroyd wrote and mailed it back to him. The catch, of course, is that Sony Pictures will (wisely, we think) not move forward with a new 'Ghostbusters' film unless Murray is involved.

So then why exactly did William Shatner, of all people, post a picture of himself on his Twitter page earlier today, wearing a proton pack? And why did his caption read, "Who ya gonna call? SHATNER! I ain’t afraid of no ghosts!”

Is Shatner offering himself as a viable replacement should Murray say no once and for all to reappearing? Are Aykroyd and the studio ready to move on, and this is the first big hint that they're going in a different direction? Or is the Shat just having a bit of fun?

These are the questions that will no doubt be forming in people's minds as this photo of Shatner works its way around the intertubes. Even if it amounts to nothing, could you envision Captain Kirk joining the 'Ghostbusters' team?
