World of Warcraft Might Get Microtransactions

EDIT

Blizzard

Massively multiplayer online role-playing game giant, World of Warcraft, hasn't been hitting anywhere close to its peak. As a response to the loss of about 700,000 subscribers and about 54% of its revenue in 7 months, Blizzard is reportedly looking at adding microtransactions to the game.

A post on the SuperData blog discusses the possibility of Blizzard adding microtransactions to World of Warcraft as a means of boosting revenues. They cite the proliferation of free-to-play games and more competition as some of the reasons the game hasn't been raking in the ridiculous amount of money it used to enjoy in the past.

But SuperData points out that while revenues are down, players seem to be spending more on extra add-ons for the game, which might indicate that they'd be willing to spend money on microtransactions.

Of course, we can't assume much until word comes out from Blizzard, but we can entertain the thought of microtransactions adding new life to the game. We'll update you if Blizzard decides to move in this direction with World of Warcraft.
