Tecmo-Koei seems to be brushing up on NInja Gaiden's history if this trailer for Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z's side-scrolling mode is any indicator.

Travel back to the days of the Nintendo Entertainment System and check out how Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z would look after being given the retro treatment. This trailer for the side-scrolling mode calls to mind classic Ninja Gaiden action even though the game itself is still cel-shaded and in 3D.

The story, however, is told by using a series of single-frame cutscenes that are pixelated for that added retro effect. Check out the trailer above and watch Yaiba tear up zombies, cars and everything else that's offensive to his eyes in the 2.5D side-scrolling mode. Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z will be released on March 6, 2014 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
