One of the most talked about films at this year’s Sundance film festival was Z for Zachariah, the new film from Compliance director Craig Zobel. Lionsgate has debuted the first trailer for the post-apocalyptic love triangle drama, imagining a world in which the last few people standing are also three of our most beautiful. So yeah, that can’t end well.

Early reviews of the film indicate something far more complex and compelling than the simple love triangle, and the trailer does a fair job of teasing out that heightened, somewhat unnerving drama. If you’re familiar with Zobel’s previous film, then you know that there’s more than meets the eye with this one.

Margot Robbie plays a woman who believes she’s the last person alive, living in a prosperous valley that was somehow shielded from a nuclear war that wiped out civilization. But then she comes across another living soul (Chiwetel Ejiofor), and the pair fall for each other…until another man surfaces (Chris Pine), and everything changes.

Here’s the official synopsis:

In the wake of a nuclear war, a young woman survives on her own, fearing she may actually be the proverbial last woman on earth, until she discovers the most astonishing sight of her life: another human being. A distraught scientist, he’s nearly been driven mad by radiation exposure and his desperate search for others. A fragile, imperative strand of trust connects them. But when a stranger enters the valley, their precarious bond begins to unravel. Z FOR ZACHARIAH is inspired by the novel of the same name by Robert C. O’Brien, published posthumously in 1974, and was created by Pall Grimsson and adapted for the screen by Nissar Modi (Breaking At The Edge).

Z for Zachariah hits theaters on August 20.
