Zoe Kravitz was one of the surprise additions to the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them cast, and even more surprising when it was revealed in the movie that she plays Newt Scamander’s former love interest Leta Lestrange. She’s not in that movie for very long (not much more than a shot), but she’ll have a much bigger role in the sequels as the relationship between her and Newt is explored further.

In an interview with Collider, Kravitz talked about how Leta and Newt have a very “complex” relationship with one another. We know they broke up at some point, and it ended badly, and we also pretty much know that Newt actually marries Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston). So Leta’s reintroduction into the series is going to be awkward, to say the least. Kravitz told Collider that production on the sequel is set to start this summer:

No, that starts in June or July, I think. It’s sometime in the summer. I’m very excited. The one day I was on set for that, and also for my audition process, being able to work with Eddie [Redmayne] and David [Yates] was incredible. The script was very under wraps, so even signing onto it, I hadn’t read the script. I just went off of who was involved, and J.K. Rowling and the Harry Potter films, so I knew it was going to be incredible, especially with how involved J.K. is. And then, I got to see the film, after I was already signed on, and it exceeded my expectations. That was a really interesting experience, to sit back and watch a movie that you loved, and then get to walk out and say, ‘I get to be in that!’ It’s a very cool thing.

She doesn’t know exactly how much more screen time she’ll get, but it sounds like she’ll be in more than one sequel.

I think there’s a few ahead. The relationship between Leta and Newt Scamander is a complex relationship, so I think there will be a lot of time for that to grow and develop, which will be fun.

It’s kind of crazy how secretive the whole process behind making one of these movies is — not even the actors know for sure what a scene is about until they’re there in the studio filming it. Kravitz said during her audition, she and Eddie Redmayne didn’t even know exactly what was going on in the scene they were reading.

I know nothing! I have an idea, based off of when I auditioned, but I know nothing. Even when I went to go do my chemistry read with Eddie, he was trying to help me piece together what was happening in the scene that we were reading. He doesn’t get to see anything either, so he was like, ‘I think based off of this line and this line, and what we shot here and here, this is what’s going on.’ We had to guess. It was funny to watch him, trying to piece it all together.

Kravitz was a very cool addition to the cast and we’re excited to see where her role takes her next. Who knows, we may get to see a certain other Lestrange family member in an upcoming sequel.
