It wasn’t long after Bill Paxton’s passing that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. stepped up to clarify the late Training Day star wouldn’t reprise his role as John Garrett for their “What If” reality. The spring return acknowledged Paxton with a credits memorial, but tonight’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. gave an extra-special shout-out to the beloved actor.

Among the myriad losses created by actor Bill Paxton’s sudden passing, few might recall TV credits like the Twister star’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 1 stint as Hydra villain John Garrett. The character seemed thoroughly retired, though Season 4's recent introduction of a “What If” reality opened a door for Paxton to return, something producers have stepped up to clarify is not the case.

The film and TV communities are still reeling from the sudden loss of actor Bill Paxton, especially in light of the Terminator star’s still-active career. Most immediately, Paxton could be seen leading CBS’ Training Day adaptation, of which producers now clarify the late actor’s filming status, and offer comment on his passing.

As a teenager in the ’90s, no actor better represented blockbuster movies than Bill Paxton. Although Paxton wasn’t typically a leading man in those movies  —  he would often play the brother, the second-in-command, or the comic relief  —  he served as a kind of talisman of quality.
