American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson

FX has barely scratched the surface of its Katrina-centric second season of American Crime Story, and is already planning a third to rake in the Emmys. The network has officially renewed Ryan Murphy’s other anthology for Season 3, plotting to chronicle the murder of fashion designer Gianni Versace.

However much of the real People v. O.J. Simpson trial FX may have been fictionalized, the Emmys in hand can speak to their successful dramatization. Still, the implied chemistry between prosecuting attorneys Marcia Clark and Chris Darden got tongues wagging, to which the real Darden now admits the pair were “more than friends.”

If a lead role in each subsequent American Horror Story and an Emmy for The People v. O.J. Simpson hadn’t clued you in, Sarah Paulson remains one of Ryan Murphy’s closest collaborators. So it is, that after a universally-acclaimed turn as Marcia Clark, Paulson is confirmed to return for the Katrina-centric Season 2 of American Crime Story.

The miniseries or movie category makes things tougher to sort out each year, but the Outstanding Lead Actress award at the 2016 Emmy Awards was definitely Sarah Paulson's to lose. So it is, that the People v. O.J. Simpson star took home the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie award at the 2016 Emmy Awards.

Sarah Paulson stands as proof that anyone in Ryan Murphy’s orbit and end up on multiple series, and Cuba Gooding Jr. will learn by example. O.J. himself, the American Crime Story star will make the leap to American Horror Story with a confirmed role alongside Paulson in Season 6.

FX bosses have made clear that American Crime Story would plumb a broader criminal focus than The People v. O.J. Simpson, noting early on that Hurricane Katrina would form Season 2's main story. Now, we know the as-yet-untitled follow-up will take advantage of additional episodes, casting some of the nation’s most notable figures.

The moment American Crime Story indicated Season 2 would follow The People v. O.J. Simpson with a focus on Hurricane Katrina, we knew the series had a broad definition of “crime.” In fact, FX bosses don’t want to return future seasons to a courtroom anytime soon, nor would they revisit any of the famed O.J. Simpson participants. Sorry, Sarah Paulson.

The fine folk at Honest Trailers rarely get into the TV game (even less often double-dipping), but suffice to say, certain series might take years to make the rotation. No longer, as all the major Emmy 2016 contenders, from The Americans to Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt get their own mini trailer parodies!

Boy, that was quick. 2016 Emmy nominees were announced this morning, and special presenters Lauren Graham and (a very excitable) Anthony Anderson wasted no time in revealing this year’s crop of nominees. While there was rightfully plenty of love to go around for dramas like The People v. O.J. Simpson and Mr. Robot, and comedy faves Veep and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, there were a few disappointments — namely, where the hell is UnREAL?! Or The Leftovers? Come on, Emmys.
